When a friend of ours and myself went to get his wife a birthday present he knew what he wanted to get her. She had been wanting it for such a long time and we went straight to it. We went to the jewelry store and to the necklaces. It was a diamond and pearl necklace. He had saved a long time for it and many holidays had gone by. He finally had enough and he was sure she would not even remember the necklace since it was out of their normal gift range. When you have children the expenses lean toward them and things like necklaces can come later. As he went past the watches he said that one day he is going to get himself a really sturdy reliable watch like the Seiko Automatic Watches. He started telling me about how much he would love to have this watch and his eyes lit up. That was the first time I realized how much they actually sacrifice for their children. He had the kids make the birthday box that they were going to put the necklace in. When it came time to give “the gift” they were at our home. After the cake and ice cream he pulled out the home made box and put it on the table. She smiled at him and said but you always give me flowers. He said not this year he did something different. She realized times had been particularly hard so she felt perhaps her flowers were too much so she would be happy with what ever was in the home made box. She then took a deep breath and said that she would love what was in the box she was sure but she had done something for him and she would appreciate him taking back her gift just this once. She then pulled a home made box out for her husband. Tears filled the room. They actually share a birthday and she has never given him anything and he would bring her a bouquet of flowers! We did not know that until that moment. He opened his gift and there stood the very watch that he had only dreamed of. She smiled and they hugged with many tears. He handed her “the gift”and said that it was paid for and he thinks she can use it. She looked at it and guessed that it was dish rags as she looked at the size of the box and the hint that she could use it. He smiled and winked at us as she opened the box so carefully so the kids would see she appreciated their efforts. When she saw the necklace she was speechless. She said that she couldn’t keep it and his response was sure you can it is yours and paid for. I have never seen her without that necklace on since that day. She said it is like her husbands love wrapped around her neck so she can not take it off. He said every time he looks at his watch he is reminded how much he loves his wife. I am glad we got to be a part of such a huge event in their lives.
