Life is hard enough just keeping up with everything that we have going on daily. One thing that we can not do is let our guard down. We have to keep ourselves aware of our surroundings no matter what we are doing or how busy we are. It is best to know as much about your surroundings as you can so you are aware of any hidden dangers or sometimes not so hidden dangers.  Knowledge is power So making yourself familiar with the local neighborhood is always a good idea.  It seems like the local government has their hands tied with what to do with released sex offenders. They can only control where they live by enforcing the sex offender laws on what they can not live near such as schools.  You can log on and get virginia sex offender reports and find out just where the offenders  live in your area. Be sure to inform everyone you know and hope this information will keep you and your loved ones safe. When we had an offender move into our neighborhood the local sheriff came around and passed out fliers. He spoke with the children and explained to them why they were to stay away from that home. We were so glad when he asked had any of their parents spoken to them about strangers and all of our children stood up and explained what a stranger was and what they looked like. You tell them a million times and now I know they listened and understood. The secret is to go over safety rules often so they know they are important and also to ask them questions to make certain that they understand and are not just repeating words. Kids understand better while teaching others so I also let them teach each other about ideas of safety they may have as I listen. The time you spend could be priceless if they need  to apply the rules.
